Jumanji: The Next Level Ramps Up The Rock

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

Not often do sequels meet expectations, but Jumanji: The Next Level is one of those. So short on the tails of another fantastic sequel in Frozen 2, audiences have been blessed with the comedy styles of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black again. Once again, Jumanji traps the minds of its players in avatars that must complete a game, but the twist is that instead of four teens, there are also two elderly gentlemen along for the ride and the hijinks ensue. Most of the humor was obvious and slapstick, but seeing the Rock and Kevin Hart act like old men was endearing enough to overlook the simple humor. Besides the premise, very little about Jumanji: The Next Level is different from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Both hit similar plot points, but The Next Level is lighter with the exposition, focusing on introducing new characters in both the real world and the game world. It also doubles down on the theme of acceptance and true friendship. There are a few subplots about separation and change, but in the end, it is a movie about fun and friendship. Honestly, there aren’t many moments that stick out, but if you enjoyed the first sequel, then you will enjoy Jumanji: The Next Level. Also, stay for the mid-credits scene that sets up a new sequel. Overall, I had a great time watching Jumanji: The Next Level. I give it 60 out of the 75 years that Danny Devito has been alive.
