A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a good movie, but it is misrepresented as a movie about Mr. Rogers. It is a movie with Mr. Rogers about a writer for Esquire who has to write a piece on Mr. Rogers. It is a story about family, overcoming anger, and personal growth in which Mr. Rogers is the catalyst. Even though Mr. Rogers is not the main character, Tom Hanks does a fantastic job of portraying him and I did not care about the writer at all. His mannerisms and makeup are great, even though his voice is a little deeper. The movie was treated as an episode of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, and at times it felt like it. In some well-shot and engrossing moments, I reverted to my childhood watching people interact with puppets and bare their souls. The scenes with Mr. Rogers were far and away the best parts of the movie. His wisdom in the movie was ripped directly from real interviews and scenes from the show. His wisdom guided the growth of the writer as he learned to forgive his father who was an awful person until he was dying. Full disclosure, I am broken because the father was played by Chris Cooper, who I will always see as the villain from The Muppets, Tex Richman. I cannot see him as anything except a villain and will never forgive him for trying to cheat the Muppets out of their theater. Anyway, he did a great job as the jerk father. Every other actor did a good job as well, but they were all overshadowed by Hanks. This movie was not as good as the documentary that came out last year, but it was still good. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, you will appreciate A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. I give A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood 640 out of 912 episodes of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.
