Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is exactly what the trailers advertised. It is a ridiculous, over-the-top action movie centered around two familiar characters that have to save the world with their toughness and cheeky dialogue. If you are looking for character depth, look elsewhere. If you are looking for realistic physics, look elsewhere. If you are looking to suspend your disbelief and smile for a couple of hours, then you are in the right place. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their roles of Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw from the recent Fast and Furious movies, in which they were last seen reluctantly working together to try and stop Charlize Theron and save the world. In this movie, they reluctantly team up to try and save Shaw’s sister from a shadowy organization with Idris Elba as it’s heavy and save the world. So much of this movie is interchangeable, but it would work regardless due to the charisma and chemistry of its leads. Johnson and Statham constantly measuring up against each other until the climactic battle at the end is what makes the movie work. Their constant repartee fills any seen without action to keep the viewer engaged. It is almost two and a half hours, but it feels like 90 minutes. There are some fun cameos throughout the movie, but don’t expect the usual suspects from the Fast and Furious movies. What you should expect is some impossible action coursing through improbable scenarios that make a fun movie reminiscent of 1980s and 1990s. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is love child of a buddy cop movie and a Pierce Brosnan era Bond movie with a triple shot of espresso straight to the bloodstream. I can’t say that it was a good movie, but I had a blast watching it. I give Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw 1 out of 1 truly unnecessary Roman Reigns cameo.
