Stuber (2019)

Stuber is the story of a cop who loses his partner and is seeking revenge. When the time finally comes, though, he just had Lasik surgery so he can barely see and can’t drive, so he has to call an Uber. The premise is sound and the casting of Dave Bautista as the cop and Kumail Nanjiani as the Uber driver, Stu (hence the title Stuber), was very good. It was a nice combination and they had some decent give and take, but beyond that it was lackluster at best. The inherent absurdity of the premise is continuously played out as the pair navigate between various cop movie tropes, like an informant’s warehouse, and a vet’s to get patched up without being on the grid, and a strip club to where the less awkward one gets info on the case and the more awkward one has to deal with the strippers. While the comedy fell flat in most instances, the action was solid. Having a former professional wrestler as the lead and a legitimate martial artist in Iko Uwais as the antagonist led to some realistic and aggressive fight scenes. I highly recommend checking out Uwais’ other works, particularly the Raid franchise. He is marvelous. But this movie wasn’t. Stuber was an excessively average ride. I give Stuber 3 out of 5 stars (I know this rating seems boring, but that is how Uber rating’s are done).
