Spider-Man: Far From Home is the Second Best Spider-Man Sequel

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Spider-Man: Far From Home picks up where Avengers: Endgame left off. It follows Peter Parker as he tries to pick up the pieces of his old life after missing 5 years of it. It creates an interesting dynamic between Peter, his classmates, and the city, as everyone is looking for something different from him. Peter just wants to take a break and enjoy his class trip, but some, like Nick Fury, expect him to replace Iron Man, and others, like Aunt May, want him to be his own hero. Just to warn you, the funny scene from the trailer with the cops and Spider-Man joking about taking their jobs is not even in the movie. I was disappointed, to say the least, because that, along with every other joke in the trailer, was the extent of the humor. There were a few other jokes and there was Peter’s friend Ned, but it wasn’t nearly as funny as it wanted to be and definitely not as funny as Spider-Man: Homecoming. Even though the comedic performances were toned down, the acting was great, particularly Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jon Favreau. Holland continues to be the best take on Spider-Man in film, playing a growing hero with conflicts that are consistent with any teen facing change. It is nice to see a superhero struggle with relatable demons, like “can I measure up to those before me?” and “how do I talk to the girl I like?” Gyllenhaal as Mysterio and Favreau as Happy Hogan were excellent in their roles and shared some truly tender moments with Peter Parker, as he tries to fill the paternal void left first by his uncle and then by Tony Stark. Gyllenhaal also shines in the action scenes. He has done consistently great work for years, and it is nice to see him really rake in the cash from a Marvel movie. Mysterio has long been one of my favorite Spider-Man characters, and it was nice to see that special effects could translate him onto the big screen. The effects were remarkable and everything looked gorgeous, which is expected at this stage but still welcome. I can’t say much more without spoiling the movie, but just know that it was a more or less faithful Spider-Man story and hits just about all of the right notes. Even though it was less funny than some of the recent Marvel movies, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I give Spider-Man: Far From Home 3000 out of the 3500 miles from New York to London.
