Ugly Dolls is one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. I wanted this movie to be the biggest pile of garbage to come out this year, but it was fine. It was harmless and well animated. Kelly Clarkson and Nick Jonas were actually very good in their roles and their songs were often catchy. It isn’t a terrible movie to show your kids. Ugly Dolls has a nice message about being yourself and overcoming obstacles to achieve your dreams. It creates stakes, develops characters, and has good pacing. I would say it is a good children’s movie, but there is one glaring flaw and they follow Kelly Clarkson’s character everywhere. The side characters are painful. While the main characters have family friendly depth and motivations, the side characters are flat and annoying. Pitbull, Wanda Sykes, and Gabriel Iglesias are awful, with terrible jokes, terrible timing, and terrible voices. Even their “redemption” scenes are ruined by jokes that don’t land or songs they can’t sing. To be honest, I would have been happier if the entire movie was at their level of quality. I hoped that this movie would be a big fat zero out of anything, but unfortunately Ugly Dolls was okay. I give it Mr. 3000 out of Mr. Worldwide.
