The Lego Movie 2: The Second One (2019)

The Lego Movie 2: The Second One is a follow up to one of my favorite movies of all time. It is difficult for me not to compare this movie to its predecessor, but I will do my best to give it a fair shake. The Lego Movie 2 reassembles its entire cast to expand its universe and lore as a direct sequel to The Lego Movie. Its story picks up immediately after the invaders from Planet Duplo come to Bricksburg on Taco Tuesday, which builds the conflict for this new story. What follows is 2 hours of non-stop puns, references, catchy tunes, and self-discovery. The Lego Movie 2 gives new characters a chance to shine, while still letting Chris Pratt’s Emmet and Elizabeth Banks’ Lucy be the focus. While the first Lego Movie was a surprisingly deep take on innocence and child-like wonder, The Lego Movie 2 has a more overt message about friendship and unity. This sequel lacked the subtlety of its predecessor, even with the wordplay about non-Lego situations. While not as good as its previous installment, where the Lego Movie 2 surpasses the original is with its music. It has several musical numbers, each of which was incredibly catchy and hilarious. The song between Tiffany Haddish’s Queen Watevra and Will Arnett’s Batman was brilliant and had several laugh out loud lines (or as the kids say, lol). Even though the songs were great, my favorite parts were the raptors and their dialogue. Whenever a raptor growled or roared, it was subtitled and I laughed every time. They even subtitled “pew pew pew” as they flew around in spaceships. I thoroughly enjoyed The Lego Movie 2: The Second One. Overall, it was a worthy successor to The Lego Movie, even if it didn’t have all of the magic of the original. I give The Lego Movie 2: The Second One 70 out of the 75 times I have already listened to “Catchy Song” from the movie. It really does get stuck in your head.
