Isn't It Romantic (2019)

Isn’t It Romantic was a true surprise for me. I was not expecting much, since the last outing with Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine was the proverbial nail in the coffin that was Pitch Perfect 3. I feared that they would be too over the top to carry a movie without other characters to shine over them, but it turns out that my fears were completely unfounded. Wilson and Devine, along with Prikanka Chopra and Liam Hemsworth, were equal parts hilarious and charming. In what started as a hatchet job on romantic comedies as a genre, Isn’t It Romantic delivered one of the best entries in the field. Wilson plays a jaded New York architect who doesn’t believe in love and gets a head injury that makes her wake up in a romantic comedy. One of the highlights of the film is how cleverly it hits every cliché, from the stereotypical gay best friend, which they admit sets back LGBT imaging in media, to the cover up of cuss words using background noises. In most comedies, there is an overload of fluff thrown in just for laughs, but Isn’t It Romantic only had one or two scenes that didn’t serve the greater narrative. I don’t usually laugh aloud in theaters, but I was consistently chuckling and snorting throughout the movie. Wilson truly carries the film, having genuine interactions with every caricature that she encounters while bringing smiles and energy for the whole runtime. It was one of the cutest movies that I have seen in a while. The only flaw was that it was very predictable, like most romantic comedies. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Isn’t It Romantic and give it 11 out of 13 going on 30.
