Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Makes Everything Possible

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has done the unthinkable. It has supplanted Avengers: Infinity War. I watch movies because it gives me joy, and no movie since The Muppets in 2011 has made me as happy as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I honestly cannot find a single flaw. The movie follows the creation of a new Spider-Man, Miles Morales, as universes collide and he works with a Spider-Team to save the day. It was a straightforward story, but it was beautifully done and consistently worked. The animation style was innovative and gorgeous, creating a beautiful amalgamation of modern techniques and classic Ben-Day dots (using four colored dots to create textures in comics that was used in the ‘50s and ‘60s). The colors were vibrant and rich, creating a New York more like a comic than any other comic book movie. Not only was the world fantastic to look at, it was filled with intricate and diverse characters, many of whom seemed out of place on paper, but were blended into the movie perfectly. I was reticent when I saw Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir in the trailer, and every negative thought I had was quickly erased from my mind as they translated brilliantly to the screen. Although the cast of characters was extensive, everyone was given at least one moment. These moments and the note-perfect dialogue made the two plus hours fly by. The script was consulted by one of the best comic writers ever, Brian Michael Bendis, and he ensured that the main character, Miles, was true to his original form that Bendis originally wrote. Bendis helped Phil Lord, who is a brilliant writer/director/producer, create a simple comic book story with delicate intricacies to elicit a full range of emotions. Their dialogue was funny, heartfelt, poignant, and real and it humanized every character, even the pig. Lord even snuck in an Easter Egg of Abe Lincoln from his underrated show Clone High. Even the soundtrack was brilliant, especially the original songs for the movie. Top to bottom, I think that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is perfect. I will probably watch it two or three more times in theaters. I adored this movie and give Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse all of the universes in the multiverse.
