The Happytime Murders Were Laughable

The Happytime Murders (2018)

I am very glad I didn’t see The Happytime Murders with my mom. The Happytime Murders was a fun twist on the classic noir detective movies. It was reminiscent thematically of Who Framed Roger Rabbit but much more raunchy. It was the story of a disgraced cop turned P.I. trying to solve the case of the murders of an old TV show and used that plot to drag your childhood to the grit and grime of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. It was a clever movie and made me laugh consistently, but it had its flaws. I found it very predictable and the jokes often swung at the low-hanging fruit. Even though I didn’t laugh at every joke, there was enough humor and character driven scenes to keep my attention. The Happytime Murders was also a very short movie, compared to most modern comedies, which was appreciated. It didn’t overstay its welcome and didn’t drag out scenes that could have easily hurt the movie. Melissa McCarthy was even tolerable throughout the entire movie. She let the absurdity of the premise do the heavy comedic lifting and played most of the movie straight, which she can do very well. That is why movies like Spy worked, but Tammy didn’t. Overall, I enjoyed The Happytime Murders (that is a very dark sentence out of context) and give it 5 out of the 7 cast members on The Happytime Gang.
