Sorry to Bother You (2018)

I went to see Sorry to Bother You today, and it was the second strangest movie that I have seen this year (only behind The Shape of Water). That is not a knock on this movie, because I did enjoy it. The first hour and forty minutes are a social commentary on race, economic disparity, and just power constructs in general, but the last twenty minutes are chaos. I can find no other word to describe it without spoiling it. Just know that the third act is wild and it takes a very sharp turn to get there. Beyond just the end, it was one of the more clever movies this year. The movie gives a cool sense of dissonance by having David Cross’ voice come out of Lakeith Stanfield and Patton Oswalt’s voice from a Omari Hardwick in an eyepatch. Boots Riley, who wrote and directed Sorry to Bother You, also does a phenomenal job of using setting as a character. Every scene was very busy, but it wasn’t just for the sake of having things happen in the background. All of the background props and actors had a purpose, and I want to re-watch to see if I can catch more than I did in one viewing. I did have a couple of issues with the movie though. At times in the second act, it got away from the visuals and clever dialogue that hooked me in the trailers and first act and it dragged a during some scenes in the middle. But overall, I did enjoy Sorry to Bother You and I give it 5 people out of an 8-person Worry Free domicile. And just a warning about the social commentary, there are scenes that will make you feel uncomfortable, but that is the point of social commentary, otherwise nothing will ever change.
