Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Lets the Dinosaurs Loose

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

After Ocean’s Eight, I saw Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which was a wholly unnecessary, but ultimately enjoyable, movie. First, I need to mention the score. It sounded and felt like a John Williams score, even though it was by Michael Giacchino. I kept finding myself thinking, ‘wow, this sounds perfect’ when I should have been more concerned with plot points or action set pieces. It made some moments seem much more powerful, even though those moments were largely superfluous. While I had a blast watching Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, it was not without problems. It did not have a very strong script, delivering cliché lines between various action scenes, but to make up for it, it did have dinosaurs. Also, it did give away almost all of the plot with the trailers and advertisements. On the flipside, it did have dinosaurs. The biggest problem I had with the movie, was how it retconned Christ Pratt and his raptor’s relationship to make it much more than it was in the first Jurassic World movie, bordering on maternal which is against his character. The additional relationship between Pratt and Blue was a little forced and makes me nervous for the direction of the franchise. A counterpoint to that is that there was a velociraptor and other dinosaurs. At times, it felt like there was a little too much Chris Pratt, and it just hurt my soul to type that, but to balance that there was an excellent Jeff Goldblum cameo that was very true to his character from the previous movies. But for all of its flaws, it was a clear indictment of humanity’s obvious problems and it also had dinosaurs. Overall, I give Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 8 dinosaurs for auction out of 11. On a sidenote, I thought that the Mosasaurus did not get enough use and I was pleasantly surprised by the Stygimoloch, which is the Cranidos to the Pachycephalosaurus’ Rampardos (now that is a very nerdy reference).
