Rampage (2018)

I really enjoyed Rampage. That is in no way endorsing it as a good movie. It contradicted itself six ways to Sunday, but boy was it stupid and fun. If you want to see monsters fighting or the Rock being the Rock or just have a vendetta against the city of Chicago, then Rampage is the movie for you. The plot was as thin as my hair, but it made enough sense to keep the audience engaged. There was very little character development since everyone was already a transparent stereotype, but everyone played their part well enough. The effects were top notch and believable the entire time. If you ever need to turn your brain off and relax for 2 hours, Rampage is just what the doctor ordered.
I give Rampage 2 out of 3 ridiculously mutated animals.
Isle of Dogs (2018)

I also enjoyed Isle of Dogs, but I can see it bothering a lot of people. It is very quirky and gorgeous, but it relies on non-verbal communication for much of the film because the boy speaks Japanese and the dogs bark (which is translated to English). It was an adorable story about a boy and his dog fighting to be a family against a corrupt government. Its story was much more realistic than Rampage and was at its core about loyalty and love overcoming differences. It was a little ridiculous, but Isle of Dogs delivered in the same ways that Wes Anderson movies always do. Its oddness is not for everyone, but if you like Anderson's other movies, then you will enjoy Isle of Dogs. It was not as good as Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is one of my all time favorite animated movies, but I still thoroughly enjoyed Isle of Dogs.
Isle of Dogs gets 4 out of 5 scrappy guide dogs.
